Here are listed some key features and expressions that are used in Netvibes. Please refer to it regularly, this list is updated each time we add a major feature.

English

activities

Activities Location: Netvibes top navigation bar/Activities

The Activities section lets you view all items that you have starred and check out the items starred by your friends and their status updates. Activities are composed of 3 different timelines:

  • My private activity: timeline of your activities in Netvibes that you want to keep private for personal use (ex: starring some articles to read them later)
  • My public activity: timeline of your activities in netvibes that you want to make public so you can share them with your friends.
  • Friends activity: timeline of the activities made public by your friends.

bookmark

Bookmark Location: Netvibes Add Content/Essential widgets

Bookmarks are an easy way to catalog and store web page URLs and access them later. In Netvibes, you can use various ways to bookmark your favorite sites:

  • Link module found in Essential Widgets
  • Bookmark widget found in Essential Widgets
  • Other bookmark services that have a netvibes widget: del.icio.us, FOUND!!!, We (heart) it...

buzz

Buzz Location : http://www.netvibes.com/buzz

Netvibes Buzz is a Netvibes related website where you can view the public activities of Netvibes Users. By displaying both the latest starred items and most popular shared items, Buzz allows everyone (even if not registered on Netvibes) to discover what's new and cool from around the web.

Contacts

Contacts Location: Netvibes top navigation bar/Contacts

The Contacts section lets you see who are the Netvibes Users you are connected to. It is divided in 4 parts:

  • Friends: Netvibes users that you added as friends and Netvibes users that you subscribed to, so you can follow their activities
  • Followers: Netvibes users who added you as friend and Netvibes users who subscribed to your activities so they can follow your activities
  • Find Friends: Find other Netvibes users in your existing Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail/Live Messenger, Facebook contacts etc...
  • Invite Friends: Send e-mail invitations to your friends so that they can discover Netvibes

ecosystem

Ecosystem Location: http://eco.netvibes.com

Ecosystem is the name of Netvibes’ widget directory. It contains several thousands of RSS feeds, iCal, widgets, games, as well as official Netvibes universes. Ecosystem content is either accesible via http://eco.netvibes.com or via Netvibes using the Add Content categories and search.

Feed

"A web feed (or news feed) is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content (...). It is mostly used to publish frequently updated work such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video in a standardized format" (Wikipedia).
Netvibes can read various feed formats: RSS, RDF, ATOM, OPML, podcast feeds...

Feed reader

Feed reader

"A Feed Aggregator, also known as a Feed Reader, news reader or simply an Aggregator, is a client software or a Web application which aggregates syndicated web content such as news headlines, blogs, podcasts and vlogs in a single location for easy viewing" (Wikipedia).
In Netvibes, when we refer to the feed reader, we are talking about the rectangular-shapped container that displays the latests entries from the feed of your choice.

Featured

Featured Location: Netvibes/Add content/Browse Categories/Featured widgets, Ecosystem

Featured items refers to quality content selected by our team and highlighted in Netvibes and/or Ecosystem.

Followers

Followers Location: Netvibes top navigation bar/Contacts

Your followers are people who subscribe to your activities. You can share your favorite articles and widgets and show them your status.

Ginger

Ginger

"Ginger" is the codename of the current version of Netvibes. Additionnaly, it is a plant used as a delicious cooking spice ;)
Previous Netvibes codenames include: Coriander, Cinnamon, Anise. A Vintage version is also available for those who love the old-school look!

ical

iCal Location: Netvibes Add Content/Essential Widgets

iCal (iCalendar) is a standard for calendar data exchange. Netvibes supports iCal feeds and displays them as widgets with a small calendar embedded. Sometimes, iCal widgets are called "Events".

OPML

OPML Location: Netvibes Add Content/Add a feed, Profile/Edit My Profile/Feeds/

OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) files allows to organize and exchange list of web feeds. Netvibes supports OPML in 2 ways:

  • you can import OPML files using Add Content/add a feed
  • you can backup your files by exporting them to an OPML file. Click on your username, then go to Edit my profile/Feeds/Export my feeds

Podcast

Podcast

Netvibes can easily read audio podcasts thanks to its built-in podcast player. Check Wikipedia for more info on podcasts.

Premium Universe

Premium Universe

Branded universes embedded into a website are called "Premium Universes". E.g. http://www.lefigaro.fr/monfigaro/

Premium Widget

Premium Widget

Premium widgets are widgets built by Netvibes for our partners. This includes multi-feed widgets (e.g.Wired), video widget (e.g. Allociné), stock widget (e.g. Wikinvest) and others. As they are built using Netvibes' UWA technology, they run on Netvibes but also on other platforms.

Private page

Private page

Netvibes allows you to customize your own personalized startpage. This page is called "private page" because it's configured by yourself for your personal use. This page is not viewable by other users.

Settings

Settings Location: Netvibes Settings

Head to the top-right corner of the Netvibes page to find the Settings panel where you can configure Netvibes the way you like it. It includes languages, local content options, general preferences and theme/colors selection.

Sign in

This link will allow you to start your session if you already registered in Netvibes (Synonyms: Log in, Connection).

Sign up

Sign up Location: Netvibes top navigation bar

This link will allow you to register to netvibes if you are not registered yet (= create an account).

Sign out

Sign out Location: Netvibes top navigation bar

This link will let you quit your session (Synonyms: Log out, Disconnect).

Share as favorite

Share as favorite Location: Netvibes widgets options / feed reader

Any item or article in your Netvibes page can be published to your public activity. It will then appear as "shared as a favorite".
There are multiple ways to share an item:

  • In the widgets options, under the little envelope, you will find the option "Share as a favorite"
  • When an article is open inside the feed reader window, mouse hover a title and a yellow star will appear to let you share this article as a favorite.
  • Using the Firefox extension, you can also "star" a webpage to publish it in your netvibes activities.

Start wizard

The Start wizard is an assistant that shows you, step by step, how to create your Netvibes page. It is displayed when you arrive on Netvibes for the first time. You can later find it under the Add Content section.

Status

Status Location: Netvibes top navigation bar/Profile

In Netvibes, you can change your status to reflect your mood at the moment or to talk about what are you doing right now. Your status will appear on your public activity so your followers will be able to see it when it is edited.
There are two ways to edit your status: from the Profile section, or using the "Friends activities" widget found in Add Content/Essential Widgets.

Subscribe

Subscribe Location: Netvibes top navigation bar/Profile/

To Subscribe means adding to a page. It is used when you add a feed to your page, whether it's a news feed or the feed taken from your profile page.

Tab

Tab Location: Netvibes page

In Netvibes you can organize your page content into different tabs. When created, you can change the title of your tab, add an icon or select the number of columns. In the Tab settings, you can also share your tab by sending it to a friend or publish it to your Netvibes universe.

Tag

Tag Location: http://eco.netvibes.com (item’s pages)

Tag(s) are keyword(s) assigned to a specific piece of information. In Netvibes, tags are used when you send your own content to Ecosystem: you are then invited to assign some tags to your widget or RSS feed so people have more chance to find them while searching for a topic related to your widget. You can also browse Ecosystem’s content using the related tags displayed in a widget’s page. Check out Wikipedia for more info on tags.

To do list

To do list Location: Netvibes Add Content/Essential Widgets

Simple widget, maximum usability. It allows you to manage your own list of tasks to be completed: when you accomplish a task, cross it off the list and focus on the next one.

Universe

Universe Location: Netvibes top navigation bar

The other name of the public pages built by Netvibes Users. In Ecosystem, Universes are branded public pages (built by a brand, media, artist or organisation). E.g. The Financial Times universe: http://www.netvibes.com/ft

UWA

UWA

UWA (Universal Widget Api) is our widget platform technology. Thanks to UWA, widgets available for Netvibes run also on all major widget platforms: iGoogle, Windows Vista, Live.com, Apple Dashboard, iPhone, etc. Check out our Developers section for more info on UWA.

Webnote

Webnote Location: Netvibes Add Content/Essential Widgets

One of the simplest, yet most useful widgets on Netvibes. It allows you to write bits of text on a little post-it-like notepad and place it on your netvibes page.

Widget Location: everywhere!

A widget is a small application running on a platform (startpage like Netvibes, computer desktops like Windows Vista or Apple Dashboard, mobile device...), allowing its Users to access external content directly on their startpage/desktop. There is a large variety of widgets that you can use in Netvibes: news widgets that displays the latests articles from your favorite blog or website, video widgets with movie trailers, music players, calculators, price comparators, calendars, flash games and more.
