How to
A quick start guide to let you know how you can help translating Netvibes in your favorite language.
Netvibes philosophy has always been to give the power to the User: a personalized page should be configured exactly the way the user wants it. If you can change the layout, colors, wallpaper and widgets, why not make your Netvibes page speak the language of your choice? To achieve this goal, Netvibes uses an online translation interface that allows volunteers to localize the site in their language. Technology behind it is a mix of the GNU-licensed software Gettext and proprietary Netvibes code. There have been more than 90 translations started so far, 25 being active languages. We also support right-to-left content.
So, how to start? First, use the feedback form to ask as for an access, with mention of the language(s) of your choice. Allow 48 hours response time - we’re very busy people.
Once you receive your access, you can start translating immediately. The translation process is simple and can be summed up in 5 steps:
1) Access
Connect to the translation interface @ http://translate.netvibes.com and enter your Netvibes username and password.
2) Online translation
Select language(s) you are authorized to translate. Then, browse the strings among 3 sections. To display the latest strings, go to the latest pages of each section. A click to the "Display only messages not translated" button at the top of the page will directly show you still untranslated strings.
3) Translation Update
Your work will be visible online after we manually update the translation files. The frequency of this operation may vary from one to several times a week. You have nothing to do on your side.
4) Update notification
Once the translation files have been updated, a confirmation message will be shown. This message can be found at the top of the Translate page or directly in your Netvibes page if you use the Translation widget or subscribed to NV Translate Activities.
5) Online verification
Now that the latest version of your language is online, check that everything looks good in context. If you see typos or badly translated messages, it’s time to fix them by login again to the translate site, correct the mistranslated strings and wait for the next translation update to allow the corrections to be online. If you notice other issues (display problems, untranslated messages...) that you can’t fix, report them to our team: we’ll do our best to fix these along with the next translation updates.
Enjoy!
